The fast bowler Set to Play a Key Part in Ashes Series

Australian cricket captain

The Australian skipper has secured over 300 dismissals in 71 five-day games with an stellar bowling average.

The Australian chief selector George Bailey has stated that pace spearhead Cummins will play a "major part" in the upcoming historic rivalry.

Speculation had been growing that Cummins might be unavailable due to a ongoing back issue that remained unresolved.

Previous updates from the squad suggested no final decision had been made regarding his involvement, with the five-Test series scheduled to begin on November 21 in the WACA.

He revealed that the captain is progressing and was "optimistic" about his chances of being involved.

"We're aware that time is getting short and various factors at play, aside from his injury, but other factors as well," Bailey remarked.

"We're encouraged. We firmly believe that he will feature a major part. With luck starting in Perth. Should that not happen, then we'll pick it up."

Injury History

Cummins was ruled out Australia's limited-overs series against both Asian and Trans-Tasman rivals recently after medical tests showed a lower back issue.

He has a history of recurring issues, with setbacks in several earlier campaigns leading to absences from three Australian summers in four years.

Cummins stated he would be bold in recovery efforts in his comeback strategy to secure his spot for the contest.

The selector indicated that he did not know if the captain had resumed bowling as part of his recovery but admitted it was "getting tight" for him to be fit for the opener.

Alternative Arrangements

Should Cummins not be fit, veteran batsman Smith will assume leadership.

Versatile player Green was withdrawn recently from Australia's squad for their limited-overs matches against the subcontinent side as a precautionary measure because of discomfort in his torso.

He labeled it as a "small issue and mentioned that Green will play in the Sheffield Shield, so will be "ideally positioned to resume bowling."

"Extensive planning has gone into building out the plan for him to take part for the initial game as an all-rounder," he elaborated.

"He was only going to play the initial matches anyway. The way he swings the willow in shorter formats, should it hinder progress for another day, we opted to adopt a safer strategy."
