One two-month voyage circling the Australian Coast was terminated following the tragic passing of an elderly female passenger who was left behind by the cruise liner on a remote coastal location.

The elderly woman had been walking on the remote island with shipmates from the vessel, but separated from the party for a rest. The ship departed without her and returned several hours later after the ship staff became aware the lady was unaccounted for.

A major search operation found her body the subsequent day.

Investigative bodies are looking into the incident, together with investigators and the state coroner.

Head of the shipping company announced that guests and personnel on the ship were informed that the continuation of the cruise had been terminated due to the "sad loss and previous technical problems".

Via official communication, he further stated that passengers would be given a full refund, and said the company was working "to arrange the homeward trips of the passengers via chartered flights".

Authorities also released an revised communication, and said they had "delivered a directive to the Captain" preventing any additional guests from getting on the vessel.

The official said that they would inspect the vessel in Cairns upon its return.
