Astronaut Discloses Depression Following Wave of Harassment After Historic Trip
A Vietnamese-American astronaut has publicly detailed her emotional downturn after enduring a massive wave of online abuse in the aftermath of a historic all-female space mission.
Amanda Nguyen – known as a researcher and activist – was part of the brief journey to space in the spring, which also carried well-known figures.
The mission was heavily criticized by some, who challenged its value and carbon footprint.
Reflecting on the experience, Ms. Nguyen, who became the first Vietnamese woman in space, stated the vicious response overshadowed her achievement under an torrent of sexist abuse.
“I explained the depression could persist for a long time,” Ms. Nguyen stated in a online statement, recalling a supportive conversation from a fellow crew member in the aftermath of the landing.
She described the news reports and online discourse as an unprecedented psychological assault.
“For a full week, I was bedridden and couldn't leave my Texas location,” she wrote. “Even a month on, a phone call ended with me hanging up, weeping uncontrollably.”
Overshadowed by Sexism
Ms. Nguyen, who has dedicated her work to gynecological science and conducted tests during the mission, said all her lifelong efforts – from her scientific research and extensive preparation to the personal milestone of her roots – was overshadowed under the tide of sexist vitriol.
She is best known for her tireless campaigning championing the cause of sexual assault survivors.
Her own goal of reaching space was deferred after surviving a rape during her time as a student, leading to a protracted legal battle.
The Fog Begins to Lift
Now, eight months after fulfilling her dream, she noted the deepest pain is gradually receding, and she expressed gratitude the followers whose support helped save her. “You all saved me,” she wrote.
She added that amid the criticism, important benefits had come out of the experience, such as increased focus on her women's health research and chances to influence leaders.
Flight Details
The self-operating spacecraft departed Texas in April, carrying the all-female team on a short trip that passed the edge of outer space.
The group of women also included leaders in multiple disciplines.
The enterprise behind the flight is a private space firm launched by a well-known tech mogul.
